Phishing
Facebook, a Victim of Social Media Phishing
Jun 04, 2026
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and LinkedIn are part of the daily lives of billions of people. Users share everything from pet care tips to job promotions, making them susceptible to cyberattackers who create highly convincing fraudulent campaigns. In fact, attacks targeting social media accounted for 22.5% of cyberattacks in the fourth quarter of 2023, dropping from 30.5% in the previous quarter.
A specific case occurred on Facebook in 2021. The company took legal action against a massive phishing campaign that affected millions of users across various platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.
The attackers created more than 39,000 fake login pages that mimicked legitimate social services. Through these pages, users were deceived into entering their usernames and passwords, giving hackers direct access to their accounts. The campaign was spread via emails, messages, and social media posts, making it difficult for victims to distinguish the fraud.
The goal of Meta's lawsuit was to shut down the infrastructure supporting this massive phishing operation and to hold the attackers accountable. This case demonstrates the increasing sophistication and scale of attacks against social media users. It highlights the importance of legal and technical collaboration to protect online communities. For individual users, this phenomenon underscores the need for caution, password management, and two-factor authentication (2FA). Meanwhile, companies must be ready to detect and block threats in real time.
