Introduction

According to various online sources, ransomware is a type of malicious software created by cybercriminals to extort money. It typically spreads through suspicious emails, dangerous links, or downloads from insecure websites. Often, the user does not realize they have opened an infected file, at which point the program activates on their device. This makes ransomware a stealthy and dangerous threat to anyone using the internet. The causes of ransomware spread are often linked to a lack of caution and digital security knowledge. Using weak passwords, opening messages from unknown senders, and failing to update software are some of the primary reasons these attacks occur. Furthermore, companies that lack robust protective measures become easier targets for attackers. The use of cryptocurrencies for payment makes it difficult to identify the perpetrators and encourages the continuation of these attacks. When ransomware enters a system, it begins to encrypt data, making it inaccessible to the user. Documents, photos, and important files are locked, and a message appears demanding payment to restore them. This situation creates significant uncertainty, especially regarding sensitive personal data. Although some choose to pay, there is no guarantee that the data will actually be recovered. In this text, we will examine the most well-known types of ransomware, with real-world examples that have affected various users and organizations globally.
